November 2, 2023 | Loewe x GRLA: A Conversation with Matthew Heller, President of Loewe Americas
The Georgetown Retail and Luxury Association (GRLA) had the pleasure of welcoming Matthew Heller, President of Loewe Americas. Having worked at such renowned fashion houses as Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Bottega Veneta, and Christian Dior Couture, Heller brought a plethora of unique experiences to our community. Moderated by Professor Ricardo Ernst, Baratta Chair in Global Business and Executive Director of the Latin American Leadership Program, the conversation revealed fascinating facts about the Spanish brand.
Heller began by distinguishing that luxury is a personal and subjective matter, noting that Loewe is a cultural brand that sells luxury products. The luxury industry's challenge is its subjectivity, where perception varies from person to person. He emphasized the importance of authenticity and creating a community in the luxury market.
In discussing the role of e-commerce, he stressed the importance of storytelling, a consistent brand experience, and a personal touch. He added that LVMH absolutely 100% believes in brick-and-mortar retail, which is thriving for people who can do it right. Mr. Heller also emphasized the value of relationships, experience, and the entrepreneurial spirit within the LVMH group, and the strong role of each factor in finding jobs.
The interview concluded with a discussion about Heller’s favorite aspects of leading Loewe, which include being part of a brand with ambitions, expertise, and a strong creative spirit, as well as the support and guidance provided by the LVMH group. Georgetown students and faculty were compelled to hear Matthew Heller’s candid discussion of his journey and his valuable advice.
